Early Tuesday morning, law enforcement in Northern Colorado used drone technology to safely capture a suspect after a high-speed vehicle incident.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office tried to stop a car traveling at dangerously high speeds on Interstate 25 near Wellington. The driver refused to stop, and deputies lost sight of the vehicle.

Because the area was remote and one occupant was still at large, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office drone team was called in for assistance. Using the drone’s heat signature capabilities, operators quickly located the suspect hiding along a fence line covered in tumbleweeds. Deputies were guided to the location, and the individual was safely taken into custody.

Sheriff’s offices say this is an example of inter-agency teamwork and the ways drone technology can enhance public safety during critical incidents. Authorities also remind the public that all charges are accusations, and suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
