Tuesday, November 3rd, is Election Day in the United States. In Colorado, the ballot for 2026 is quite full, with races for governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and state treasurer, as well as every state House seat and 21 state Senate seats. All 8 Colorado congressional districts, including the 4th Congressional District, plus one U.S. Senate seat are up for a vote. 14 statewide ballot measures cover a wide range of issues ranging from taxes to immigration. Not to mention numerous local races and ballot questions. As in all elections, what active voters decide will affect everyone.

The issue is that not EVERYONE is an active voter or participates in the election process. An active voter is an eligible, registered voter whose record is current, confirmed, and without inactivity issues, which allows them to vote without additional action. In other words, they are registered voters who have voted in the last 2 federal elections, and all their information is current. An inactive voter is still registered but has not confirmed their address, voted for a while, etc. They can still vote but need to update their information first. Then some people are not registered to vote and don’t participate in the election process.

Looking at data from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office website from the 2022 General Election Turnout, active voter participation varies widely across the 7 counties in Northeast Colorado.

Here is the breakdown in percentages for the 7 counties:

  • At Number 1, with 92.38% voter turnout, is Yuma County.

  • Number 2: Washington with 73.76%;

  • Number 3: Logan with 72% even;

  • Number 4: Phillips with 71.50%;

  • Number 5: Sedgwick with 71.02%;

  • Number 6: Weld with 61.87%;

  • and Number 7: Morgan County with 58.59%.

In recent data compiled by the Morgan County Clerk & Recorder’s Office, with information from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Website, Morgan County’s average voter turnout from elections since 2020 is 55.7. 8 of the last 10 elections, Morgan County ranked in the bottom 10 (55th or worse) out of the 64 counties in Colorado, with the worst rank in the 2022 General Election, when it ranked 63 of 64 counties. It has also never been in the top 50% for turnout either.

These numbers can change, as ballots can be filled out and mailed in by October 26th. The ballot MUST arrive at the county clerk’s office by 7 pm on Election Day. (Military and overseas voters are the exception) If you register late, you can still utilize the 24-hour drop boxes that are now open. Voting centers open on Monday, October 19th, also. Finally, Colorado allows same-day voter registration & voting through 7 pm on Election Day. For more information about Morgan County Election News and information, go to morgancounty.colorado.gov.
