Government Shutdown Could Be Long

The federal government is in shutdown mode again — and this one could be bigger and longer than before.

President Trump and Congress blew past Wednesday’s funding deadline without a deal, triggering a shutdown that’s expected to furlough about 750-thousand federal workers and close many agencies. The Trump administration says some layoffs could be permanent.

Essential operations — the Pentagon, Homeland Security, Medicare and Medicaid — will keep running but with fewer staff and possible delays. National parks and Smithsonian museums are open only temporarily and could close within days.

At the heart of the standoff: Democrats want new funding for Affordable Care Act subsidies to blunt soaring insurance premiums. Republicans have refused to negotiate that as part of a short-term spending bill.

It’s the third shutdown on Trump’s watch and the first since his return to the White House. With no clear exit, economists warn the disruption could ripple through paychecks, benefit checks and government contracts in just days.

Radio, the way it's meant to be.
