A wanted parolee with a lengthy history of violent crime was back in custody and eventually sentenced following a police operation in Fort Morgan.
Fort Morgan Police say that on March 20, 2025, around 10:25 p.m., officers surrounded a property in town while searching for 29-year-old Sergio Martinez. Martinez was wanted on a warrant for second-degree assault and kidnapping, stemming from a call reported the previous weekend. Police say he had been actively hiding since the warrant was issued.
Martinez has a documented history of violence dating back more than a decade. In 2013, as a juvenile, he was adjudicated as an adult for robbery and sentenced to two years in the Department of Corrections.
In 2016, Fort Morgan police arrested Martinez on multiple charges, including kidnapping, menacing, assault, and domestic violence. That case was later reduced to a misdemeanor assault, and he was sentenced to 18 months of probation. Just months later, he was arrested in Aurora for failing to comply with that probation.
While serving a prison sentence in 2017, Martinez was charged with attempted first-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and was sentenced to ten years in the Department of Corrections, followed by three years of mandatory parole. He was released after serving seven years and returned to Fort Morgan.
Police say officers used a drone and requested assistance from Morgan County’s K-9 unit. Martinez was located and taken into custody back in March, without incident.
In a sentencing update from the Fort Morgan Police Department, Martinez was found guilty on all charges at the November 21st trial. On Friday, January 16, 2026, Martinez was sentenced to 16 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
