Colorado State Senator Byron Pelton of Sterling has announced he will seek re-election to a second term representing District 1 in the Colorado Senate. Pelton, a former Logan County Commissioner, was first elected to the legislature in 2022.

In his announcement, Pelton highlighted his work on several committees, including Agriculture and Natural Resources, Transportation and Energy, Veterans and State Affairs, Local Government and Housing, Appropriations, and the Capitol Development Committee. He also serves on the Agriculture and Water Resources Committee, representing both the South Platte and Republican River basins. Pelton was elected by his colleagues to serve as Caucus Chair for the Senate Republicans.

Pelton pointed to a number of bills he has sponsored that have become law, including measures to protect private property rights, increase penalties for human traffickers, bring greater transparency to PERA, exempt agriculture buildings from energy codes, provide telehealth services for veterinarians, reduce the income tax on Social Security benefits, and ensure insurance companies cannot deny coverage for mental health services.

He also referenced legislation he supported that did not advance, including bills to strengthen penalties for drug dealers and proposals he said were aimed at protecting women in sports. According to his announcement, Pelton has frequently worked to amend or remove language from Democratic-sponsored bills in order to protect agriculture and rural communities.

Looking ahead to the 2026 legislative session, Pelton plans to introduce bills to lower property taxes for agriculture facilities, increase penalties for child solicitation and internet luring, exempt agriculture from emissions reporting requirements, and strengthen child-trafficking laws.

Pelton’s announcement also noted several awards he has received during his first term, including Legislator of the Year honors from the Fraternal Order of Police, the Rural School Alliance, the Colorado Civil Justice League, the Colorado Association of School Executives, Logan County Cattlewomen, and the Colorado Chamber of Commerce.
