Careless driver hits CDOT employee during guardrail work on I-76

CSP – Tuesday, November 18, at 11:30 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian and a pickup truck on Interstate 70, at mile marker 310, east of the Strasburg exit. The pedestrian involved is a CDOT employee, and the driver of the pickup truck, a black Ford F150, fled the scene.
The CDOT employee was in an active construction zone, clearly marked, repairing the guardrail on the left shoulder. The Ford was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 when it traveled onto the left shoulder and hit the pedestrian and then hit a cement barrier. The Ford was left abandoned nearby, and the driver fled to a nearby town.
The pedestrian, a 58-year-old male, was transported to a local area hospital with injuries.
The driver of the Ford, a 25-year-old male named Kaleb Unrein, was later found and placed under arrest. He is being booked at the Arapahoe County Jail on the following charges:
Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injuries
Careless Driving causing injuries to a vulnerable road user.
The left lane of I-70 remains closed for the investigation and cleanup, and traffic is being diverted to the right lane. It is unknown when the road will completely open.
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash.
